That’s Ben from White Lake, Michigan’s new-to-him 2005 Boston Whaler 130 Sport -and YCM’s superstar marine mechanic/test pilot Ron putting her through the paces!
White Lake is about 40 miles north east of Detroit, she left today and Coastal Transport will have her there sometime tomorrow!
Ben’s one of those guys you just can’t help but like from the very first call - always pleasant, beyond nice, interesting -and now he’s got a Whaler!
The 130 Sport was introduced in 2000, as the long anticipated replacement for Boston Whaler’s iconic Classic 13 footer.
The all new hull came with two non-skid covered fiberglass thwart benches and a side steering console - all bright white, and nothing too fancy -but ride quality was greatly improved over its internal organ jolting predecessor.
While this post-classic 2005 130 Sport is now dated by two generations -the 2009 130 Super Sport and the 2018-current 130 Super Sport, some still prefer its more traditional Boston Whaler lines.
We tuned her up, put a new trailer underneath, and ordered a new high quality Wm J Mills bimini top for Ben.
Hopefully we’ll get some sweet boating pics before winter sets in!

Before we get too far, it’s not your glasses, it’s the photo…
Al from Coastal Transport is delivering this one, he’s a super guy, a careful and conscientious driver, and everyone likes him -but not so great with technology or photography.
At first, I thought I’d grabbed the wrong glasses, or maybe he shot this one from inside a screened porch…
Anyway, he’s working on the pictures, and hopefully texting too -I do appreciate his efforts.
Back to the Montauk - This one was fun, and a first for us -not the New Hampshire part, we send lots of Whalers to New England!
It all started with an email back in May from a lady we’ll call “Dora”, who wanted to anonymously treat her cousin to a Boston Whaler.
This was followed up with a long phone call, there were lots of questions back and forth as to how we could make it happen -delivery, and, after all, documents have to be signed, taxes paid, etc.
He’s in his 50s, has always dreamed of owning a Boston Whaler, and Dora really wanted him to have one.
She didn’t want to make a big deal out of it “expensive gifts can make people uncomfortable” - so he can’t know what it cost.
Dora just wanted the boat to show up in her cousin’s driveway, without ever knowing the benefactor -
but again, there’s documents to sign..
Initially it was an interesting, fun conversation, I enjoyed it, but didn’t expect further traction.
A couple of weeks later Dora called back. She had done her homework, and wanted to discuss various models, and more stealthy ideas.
One or two more calls, a couple of emails - then fast forward to the arrival of our 150 Montauk, and things began to fall into place.
As I understand it, her cousin has been told to “expect a package”.
I’m excited for them both, and I am rethinking the relationships I have with my many cousins -not one of which has ever sent me a Boston Whaler…

A couple of weeks ago we got a call from James at Martha's Vineyard Ship Yard on
Martha’s Vineyard.
He’d been surfing our online inventory and was interested in a few project Whalers -both as an enthusiast, and to keep his crew busy over the long upcoming Massachusetts winter.
They’re a multigenerational, family owned, old school New England ship yard. They do it all, from custom wood work and fiberglass, to sail repair, mooring, engine repair and sales -for over 175 years!
Imagine the history, the stories, and the boats!
The first on Jame’s list, and third on the truck was our 1990 Boston Whaler Mischief, which aside from a few blemishes, a shoddy partial paint job, and an untested, rather rough looking 34 year old Johnson, she really isn’t that much of a project.
After some wintertime restoration love, she’ll be rigged with a brand new Yamaha F70 - at which point, I suspect James will find her too cool to sell!
The ’82 Montauk was James’ next pick, loaded first on the truck, she’ll be a little more of a project.
This one arrived at YCM during the “covid days”, her condition was pitched to us at the time as being near excellent -that turned out to be less than true, and she was relegated to the YCM back burner.
Today, some 42 years later, she returns to the state of her birth for restoration and a second beginning.
Third on the truck is an ’87 17 Super Sport Limited, another one of our covid boats that arrived less perfect than expected.
A Boston Whaler 17 Super Sport Limited is a pretty rare find, as was the Johnson “Stinger” on the back -the engine turned out to be a parts motor at best, and the boat was shelved for a couple of years.
It wasn’t until a “FaceTime” walk-around video with James that I remembered how nice this boat actually is. She’ll need some parts, some clean up, and new power - an F70 would be excellent choice, an F90 would make her a rocket, either way, someone will get a cool boat.

Our friend Linda at PW Marine in Hamilton, Bermuda shared pics yesterday as they prepare for Ernesto.
You can see the little 170 Super Sport we shipped to Bermuda back in June packed in tightly with dozens of other boats, as they empty slips and batten down the hatches.
The storm’s eye is expected to pass over or just off shore of Bermuda on Saturday as a cat 2 or 3 hurricane bringing winds over 100 mph, drenching rains, and coastal flooding.
We’re sending some positive thoughts their way.

That’s Luke from Coastal Transport picking her up from a boat ramp on Lake Norman, just outside of Charlotte, NC.
This one didn’t come with a trailer, so we sent a Luke down there with a custom Magic Tilt Trailer set up at the factory for Boston Whaler’s 170 hull.
Magic Tilt is the current OEM supplier of trailers for Boston Whaler, having taken over from Karavan in 2018.
In fact, Magic Tilt has a 38,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Edgewater, Florida -directly across US 1 from the Boston Whaler plant!
Magic Tilt has the trailer template for most post-classic Whalers, and build custom welded aluminum trailers to those exact specs.
We’re a Magic Tilt dealer for that reason.
So, Luke met the (previous) owner at the ramp just before sunset yesterday, unloaded our new trailer from his big trailer, unhooked the truck, hooked up to our new Magic Tilt trailer, backed down the ramp, loaded the Montauk on the new trailer, loaded the boat and trailer package onto the big trailer, hooked back up to the big trailer and headed on down the road -we’ll see him later today.
We’ll have the Whaler with that shiny, new aluminum Magic Tilt trailer priced and photographed soon!

Boston Whaler Outrage off the closeout list...
Our 1988 Boston Whaler Outrage 20 left the YCM Project List yesterday afternoon following a two and half year stent on the YCM back burner.
All of these old Whalers have stories to tell, but this was a strange one with details I’ll leave out.
The title was signed over in a state prison, where the previous owner is serving a long sentence for some really bad life decisions.
The boat was kept on a lift, the waterfront home was being sold off.
We were asked to make an offer on the boat.
Boat U.S. towed her to a local ramp, we took over from there with big plans -but there were too many projects, not enough time, etc, etc.
The Outrage 20 is exactly the same as the beloved and robust Outrage 22, minus two feet off the rear-end.
They were only offered from 1985 through 1988, they’re sought after, difficult to find, and are not to be confused with the more common Outrage V20.
This one has tremendous potential, everything is there, even the original Mills top.
The right guy wound up with her -his name is Billy, he’s former Coast Guard, and a current Volunteer Marine Rescue Team EMS.
Billy’s been watching this Whaler marinate on the YCM Project List for over a year -‘till he just couldn’t take it anymore and finally gave us call!
He’s very excited to take on the project, we’re very excited to see another Classic Whaler find a good home.
Photos have been promised.
While this will be Billy’s personal boat, she’ll also be deployed as needed for search and rescue missions.

The 18’ Dauntless is the boat we’ve always referred to as “the relationship saver” - it’s corny, but true, and it’s all because of that giant rear bench seat!
It satisfies one half of the relationship's need for additional seating, while the other half gets the serious fishing center console they’ve always wanted!

1999 Boston Whaler 17 Standard!
Ok, this one's been on the YCM back burner for a while.
We bought her several months ago, decided the old Mercury wasn't up to our standards, and set her aside with plans to re-power -which we finally got around to doing!
Here's our original post from back in January....
Just arriving at York County Marine from Flagler Beach, Florida - 1999 Boston Whaler 17 Standard!!
These hard to find, and very desirable 17’ Standards were only offered from 1996 to 2000.
Boston Whaler put a wrap on the side console Classic 17 Sport series in 1992 when the last 17 GLS rolled off the Rockland, Massachusetts production floor.
The Commercial Products Division of Boston Whaler however continued to offer a no-frills, beefed up version called the Alert, which was sold primarily to government and law enforcement agencies.
The Alert hull was made with more fiberglass, a heavier duty rub rail and generally had a molded fiberglass side console with bench seats made of Starboard.
By 1996 Boston Whaler saw enough demand on the consumer side to offer a non-commercial version of the 17 Alert, which they called the “17 Standard”.
The 17 Standard utilizes the same classic self bailing 16’ 7” hull as the classic Montauks and Sports that proceeded it.
The interior is designed for low maintenance, with Starboard benches and a simple, molded fiberglass side console. Nothing fancy here -just hose it off and go!
The name can be a bit confusing, as earlier Classic 13, 15 and 17 tiller operated (no console) Whalers were also referred to as “Standard” models.
These late 90’s 17 foot side consoles are a pretty rare find.
We just pulled the original Mercury and upgraded her to a very nice 2016 YAMAHA 70 HP FUEL INJECTED FOUR STROKE with only 81 total hours!
Yamaha makes the lightest 70 four stroke available, with superb power to weight ration.
She'll be quick, super reliable, super efficient and super quiet!
She’s also managed to make it a quarter century without bottom paint!!
We’ll get her cleaned up, push her through service, and post a few more pics soon.

Introducing “Buttons,” YCM’s newest intern.
Buttons joined the inside team at York County Marine about three weeks ago, her future duties will include assisting Blitz with all things marketing, desk reorganization, and the repositioning of all countertop objects, as well as keyboard manipulation, nap time scheduling, and hopefully -badly needed spell checking -we’re really hoping this cat can spell.
Like Blitz, Buttons just kind of showed up looking for a job.
She brings to the team a high level of energy, a sassy personality, a healthy appetite, and just enough chaos to shake things up.
So far -Blitz is unimpressed.

She’s a real survivor - no bottom paint, and in the same family since day one! We’re buying her from the original owner's son.
What’s an Outrage 19? -It’s a rebadged Classic 18 Outrage, available from ’90-91.
What’s a 19 Outrage II? Available from ’92-96 -Same as above, but with considerable interior upgrades.
The top cap on the 19 II was all new and included the following changes …
Molded-in rear seats, making the classic fishing Outrage a much more family friendly model.
For the first time there’s an actual below deck bilge.
Through hull scuppers are added creating better self bailing capabilities.
There are two huge bow lockers, creating much needed storage, as well as a large casting deck for fishing -or snap in the cushions for sun lounging.
A super tall console was added - it's actually hinged, folding forward to access batteries, wiring harness, etc - and to fit more easily into the garage.
There is also a built in livewell/storage area under the leaning post, a larger 76 gallon integrated fuel tank, etc, etc.
So, if you love the Classic Outrage 18, but need something a bit more family oriented, maybe this is it.
Ours is powered by a late ‘90s Honda Fuel Injected Four Stroke 130.

Ok, so we’re mixin’ in another Grady White!
2004 Grady White 208 Adventure -Walk-Around Bow with Cuddy Cabin.
The Swiss Army Knife of 20 footers!
Growing up, we had one of the first Grady White Walk-Arounds. She was a 1976, Dad bought her brand new off the dealer lot in ’77.
There’s a pretty good write up about that boat on our website’s blog page - see “The Family Grady”.
Over the years there were several Grady Whites woven between several Boston Whalers, both iconic American boat brands, both known for outstanding quality and innovation.
Grady White invented the walk-around, and they own the walk-around.
Everyone tried to emulate Grady’s success, including Boston Whaler, but no one did it quite as well.
The walk-around concept is simple, but genius.
You’ve got a cabin taking up the front end of the boat, rendering the bow section useless to anglers or passengers, making it difficult to work the bow lines, anchor, etc.
Grady solved this dilemma by digging a deep trench around the outside of the cabin, allowing safe, easy passage all the way around the front of the boat.
Suddenly the bow of a cabin boat was not only safely accessible, but fishable, and a favorite place for passengers to sit!
When we buy a boat, we like to know the history - how many owners, what type of owner (we love our seniors), how was the boat used, where was the boat used and kept -salt or fresh, in the water, on a lift, in the garage? etc, etc.
These questions tell us the type of life a boat has lived, and help to determine if we want it in our inventory, or not!
If we don’t like the history, it’s blurry, or questionable -we’ll generally pass, in fact, we pass on a lot more boats than we buy.
We bought this particular Grady from a senior, he bought her back in 2012 from his buddy, the original owner - that means a lot.
If we can’t buy from the first owner -on a 20 year old boat, we’ll take the second!
We also love that she’s never been bottom painted, this indicates that she was never left in the water. These things help to differentiate one similar boat from another.
Had this one been bottom painted, or had a long string of owners, we would have simply taken a pass.
She arrives next weekend from the Northern Neck of Virginia, just far enough up the Chesapeake Bay where the water tastes more like tap than salt.
Back in the early 2000’s, starting with the larger boats and working down, Grady White began transitioning their hulls to their new SeaV2 design, a subtle change that dramatically improved ride quality and handling characteristics.
The 20 footers received this nearly invisible makeover in 2003 -and the ride quality got a lot better -from a “wet boat” to a “dry boat” overnight.
So, yes, a 2003 208 Adventure rides that much better than a 2002.
That 1976 walk around we had was wonderful, but outside of a theme park, one of the wettest rides I’ve ever encountered - Grady turned that around with SeaV2.

-July 4th is the deadliest boating day, and boating weekend of the year.
-Alcohol is involved in 33% of all recreational boating fatalities, and is the single greatest contributing factor in boating deaths.
-Collision with another watercraft or stationary object is the number one cause of boating fatalities, however, a surprising number of serious injuries and deaths occur while at anchor.
-77% of all of boating fatalities are due to eventual drowning, and 84% of those chose not to wear a life jacket.

We just heard from Luke @ Coastal Transport -they picked up our ’04 170 Montauk in Inverness, Florida earlier today.
Yesterday they delivered a 190 Nantucket to Annapolis, next we’ve got a 170 Montauk heading to Cape Cod, and a 150 Super Sport going to Rocky Hill, CT, then the 15 Mischief to grab in Nashville -and I think we’re all caught up, for a few minutes… 🙂

Did you know that the removable cooler/seat on all Boston Whaler 150 Super Sports and 170 Super Sports (2009-2018) was not only designed to lock into place beside the console, but also along the port side of the boat behind the bench?
Unlike all the other Igloo or Coleman coolers that are simply strapped down, this high quality, roto molded, proprietary cooler was actually worked into the original design of the boats' molded fiberglass top cap.
Pretty clever, pretty cool, and one more reason we love the 150 & 170 Super Sports!
This cooler is also quite a bit better quality than the “off the shelf” units found on today's 100k Montauks!
You’ll also find the same high quality roto molded cooler on the current 160 Super Sport as well, however the molded side mount was eliminated. That said, we love nice 160 SS too!

We bought her from a (much) older couple in Maryland, just as our seasonal business went nuts. We’ve finally squeezed her through service, and shot a few pics.

1989 Boston Whaler Mischief!
So our friend Read at Fasseco has had this rare gem of a Whaler tucked away in a storage unit for the past several years!
Lacking the playtime and needing the space more than the boat, he recently decided to let her go.
I can relate -those of us in the marine business often have a lot more boats than actual time to boat!
The Mischief debuted in 1988, just in time to celebrate Boston Whaler’s 30th birthday.
This was really the first of the anniversary special edition boats.
Ten years later, in 1998 Boston Whaler celebrated their 40th birthday with a beautiful limited edition 40th Anniversary 13 footer -with blue gelcoat interior, and classic mahogany, paying homage to the original boat that got it all started.
In 2008, celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary, a special limited edition 130 Super Sport was produced, also with the original beautiful, robin’s egg blue interior.
These anniversary editions are now sought after, nice ones are hard to find. We’ve got one of each.
I love these special editions, but sadly, all that was done to commemorate 60 years was adhere a sticker to every boat built in 2018…
Anyway, the Mischief was available through the 1990 model year, with a total production run of only 235.
They don’t show up on the market often, and it’s truly rare to find one in this condition.
The Mischief was built on Boston Whaler’s light and fast Classic 15 foot hull -so right away, you know this boat is all about fun!
The otherwise open fifteen footer’s mischievous updates consisted of a super sleek, offshore racing inspired molded fiberglass top cap, which encloses the bow, adds rear storage hatches and a few drink holders.
The upholstered interior sports a pair of pedestal seats, a large rear bench, padded side bolsters, and removable carpet.
There’s a stainless steel ski pole, wraparound stainless grab rails, and clever ladder that can be deployed for skiers and swimmers.
If you make your way under that long nose, you’ll find the same molded non-skid deck and anchor locker - just red!
Of the 235, only 139 were shot with bright, glossy red gelcoat - both inside and out!
According to Boston Whaler lore, the color was inspired by Boston Whaler’s legendary chief designer Bob Dougherty’s car, believed to have been a Guards Red Porsche 911.
We’re picking her up down in Nashville, next week -and can’t wait!
We’ll likely play with her for a while, toy with the idea of keeping her, eventually realize we don’t have enough space to collect every cool and unique Whaler that enters the YCM gates -and get serious about finding her a suitable home.
So, if you want her, let us know, we’ll figure out a price along the way, she won’t be cheap…
Oh yeah - she’s never been in salt water, never bottom painted, & always garaged.
The boat was originally owned by an older gentleman in Ohio, there are no chips, no scratches, and she’s very near to perfect.
According to Read, the old guy played (or perhaps was) Santa Claus -this boat was Santa’s sled at the town’s annual Christmas parade. I can see it - Santa in back seat, all loaded up with presents - kind of reminds me of a great Hallmark movie…
She’s powered by the original, super clean, extremely low hour Yamaha 70 hp two stroke -back then you often had your choice of outboard brands -OMC (Johnson/Evinrude), Mercury or the new (to most of us) and exciting Yamaha.
Mercury Outboards has been owned by the Brunswick Corporation since 1961, so shortly after Brunswick’s purchase of Boston Whaler in 1996, those choices were understandably whittled down to one.
Also/BTW -check out that sweet color-matched Eagle brand Red Trailer!
In the 90’s, when a Boston Whaler was delivered to a dealer in a freshwater market, they offered trailers that matched the graphics package of the boat. Green decals and green bimini top = green trailer, etc.
The red trailer under this Mischief definitely completes the custom look!
If you’re in the market for a truly different Boston Whaler that’ll garner as much attention at the snootiest of yacht clubs as it will at the local sandbar -or Christmas parade, while maintaining its value, and is super fun, can pull skiers, etc, etc - this is it!
If you’re looking for a Boston Whaler to catch a bunch of flounder, bass, or work the crab pots -this definitely is not it!
If you don’t like attention, and don’t want to be approached by strangers with questions or admiring compliments every time you pull your boat out of the garage -this boat is probably not for you.

She’s an early ’90’s Grady White 175 Spirit.
These were solidly built, traditional 17 foot center consoles, they handle the chop surprisingly well, they’re easy to tow, and launch, and don’t draft much water -that shallow draft will be important to the new owner, as she’ll be kept in a very tidal cove!
I’m a big fan of a simple 17 foot center console, in fact, I had one of these 175 Spirits myself several years ago, and I loved it.
I ran that boat all over the lower Chesapeake Bay -that said, it was about 15 years ago, and I re-powered her with a Yamaha 115 four stroke, ‘cause that original motor was too old way back then!
Seventeen feet keeps the fun in boating, without the complications of larger boats.
Sometimes a larger boat is needed, but the bigger the boat, the bigger the pain in the ____.
Anyway, this one went to a friend who has a pretty cool Classic 27’ Boston Whaler with twin 225 Yamahas -I’m betting this fun little Grady White (once running) will see a lot more on the water time than the giant Whaler!

So, if you're looking for something different, with lots of character, but also incredibly seaworthy -take a look at this…
2000 Arima Sea Ranger 17
They’re built just outside of Seattle Washington, designed to handle the rough conditions of the Pacific North West, frequently seen fishing the unpredictable waters of Alaska for giant Halibut, or fighting tuna off the Hawaiian Islands.
While we rarely see an Arima on this side of the country, and most East Coasters have no idea what they are, YCM’s curiosity for the less than normal has brought us several over the years - and we love them!
These compact super boats are incredibly efficient, designed to plane easily with lower horsepower motors, fit in the average garage, and be towed with “the family car” -and are said to be unsinkable.
Everything is modular, with a fantastic use of space -lift out floor panels, fish boxes, folding tables, removable seating, livewells, rod holders, a protective cabin with freshwater holding tank, room for a porta potti, and cushions to stretch-out on.
The sides are high, the ride is gentle and dry. Planing is quick and smooth.
Arima was founded in 1978, by the late Juichi Arima, with the goal of producing a safe, unsinkable and more efficient fishing boat capable of taming big waters.
He was often seen towing his personal 15’ Arima around the streets of Seattle behind his 1970’s Volkswagen Beetle!
Born in Japan, Arima brought a very Japanese spin to American boat building -from his designs and innovation, to quality control, to the relationship and care of employees. Juichi (John) who passed in 2022, was a legend to those that knew him, or those that know his boats.
As someone who appreciates those that think differently, and those that create great things along the way, I’d've liked to have met him.
Our 19 foot Arima is powered with the original 90 horsepower Honda four stroke, she’ll be both fast and efficient.
She’s a 24 year old one owner boat, purchased new at the factory in Washington State in 2000. The owners moved to Maine several years ago, and kept her at their summer home in Virginia. We picked her up from there.

Freshwater, garage kept, 2015 Boston Whaler 130 Super Sport w/about 30 hours!
We bought this boat the first time about 3 years ago from an old-timer on Lake Lanier, down in Georgia. At the time the boat had exactly 20 hours on the clock.
We sold her to another senior, this one in Michigan, he kept her in the garage, and took excellent care of her, but for health reasons was only able to use the boat a few times -which he assured us were great times!
He recently called and asked us if we'd buy her back, so she'll be here sometime next week!
Folks are often surprised to hear that the largest percentage of our clients are seniors (for simplicity sake, we’ll say 60+). Most are about to retire, or retired, are comfortable financially, and are looking for a safe, and reliable boat that is also easily manageable. They also love our no-worries delivery only policy.
Also, the largest percentage of boats that we purchase are from that same age group. They tend to take great care of their boats, are easy to work with, and love our safe, simple and professional approach to buying. We love our seniors.
If you’re curious, the remaining age brackets in order of percentages tend to be 50s (a close second place), then 40s, and then 30s. The folks in their 30s, while the smaller percentage, often have young families and are also looking for that same safety and reliability.
Back to our boat - This is the first generation 130 Super Sport, produced from 2009 through 2018.
The ride quality is significantly better than that of previous generation 13’ Whalers.
The higher sides and integrated internal handrails make for a safer feel as well.
Many of our clients prefer this layout, design, simplicity, and performance over the slightly heavier, and busier current version 130 SS.

This 170 Montauk left YCM this morning for North Hero, Vermont -one of four towns that make up Vermont’s Lake Champlain Islands.
Three of these, including North Hero are connected by a chain of bridges to mainland VT from the north and south. -so no ferry services needed for this island Whaler delivery.
Population < 1,000, beautiful freshwater lakes and beaches, about an hour and a half drive to Montreal -sounds like a fantastic place to spend a summer, but probably not a winter!
Conner and family bought this one, he’s promised fun pics on the lake!

If Found - Contact...
We’ve posted these “If Found - Contact” decals a few times in recent years, and many of you have taken us up on the offer.
We were recently able to get a few more of these potentially life saving decals from the USCG -and we believe every paddle board, kayak and rowboat should have one.
Whenever an unmanned kayak is found adrift and reported to the USCG, it triggers a full blown search and rescue - choppers in the air, boats in water, etc.
Most of the time the unmanned kayak or paddle board wasn’t properly secured prior to a wind event or was swept off someone’s dock at high tide.
If it has one of these decals, a quick call can be made to see if the owner is indeed in peril, or they simply lost their kayak.
It couldn’t be any easier - just fill in your name and phone number, then peel and stick the highly reflective decal on your paddle powered vessel.
Maybe it means getting your lost kayak back, maybe it means saving your life or that of a family member.
It also can mean saving valuable search and rescue time.

UPDATE - SHE HAS 51 TOTAL HOURS!
Most of our Boston Whalers tend to come from pretty far away.
In a few days, for example we’ll have a 190 Nantucket arriving from Denver, Colorado -they come from everywhere, and we send them everywhere!
-But just last week I was asked to take a look at an 11 footer located at local marina, just a few miles down the road.
The little Whaler was too heavy for the owner’s davit system, he was looking for alternatives, and gave us a call.
Life as a tender is not always easy, and this one had been well used, even a bit neglected, bearing the service scars associated with years of use as a tiny water taxi.
Between the price and overall condition we we’re unable to come to immediate terms.
-BUT THEN…
Somewhat disappointed and turning to leave, just a few feet way, the sun was gleaming off a beautiful, Classic 1985 Boston Whaler Montauk -and she was sportin’ a for sale sign -and a recent re-power!
Classic Montauk, two owners since new, excellent condition, no bottom paint, newer Honda - there was nothing we could do, we ended up having to buy her.
The 60 hp fuel injected, four stroke Honda was added new in 2019, rigged by our friends at Atlantic Marine in Yorktown. They’re the Honda folks in the area, and they always do pro-level work.
We’ll read the hours soon, and report back -they will definitely be very low.
I know what you’re thinking -“60 horsepower, that’s underpowered”
Well depending on what you’re planning, I’d argue with you on that.
For comparison sake, consider that the classic Montauk 17 tilts the scales at about 900 lbs, while the current 150 Montauk weighs in at 1,050 pounds - yet its maximum rating is 60 horsepower.
With the 60, our ‘85 Whaler will jump right up on plane, and top out in the mid to upper 30s, all along burning very little fuel, making very little noise, and offering all the reliability of a new Honda Civic, Accord, or whatever your modern automotive model of choice may be.
Now, if your boating plans revolve around wakeboarding, or hauling around three or four linebackers while roasting a pig, and carrying a keg, this motor may not be the best choice.
Want to go fishing with your buddy, or maybe pull the grandkids on a tube? No problem.
Also in 1985 -Marty McFly managed time travel in a DeLorean, The Breakfast Club was huge, MTV was actually playing great music videos, Coke had a “new” recipe, Reagan and Bush (41) were starting their second term, and I was daydreaming my way through 11th grade, wondering why in the world they were making me take Spanish and typing classes….
Anyway, our ’85 is in fantastic condition, she’s solid, the gelcoat looks great, and lacks the crazing and spiderwebbing so often found on these vintage Whalers.
She has the larger 22 gallon gas tank, which Moeller makes specifically for the 17 Montauk.
The original William J Mills bimini top comes with the boat, as do matching covers for the console and reversible pilots seat.
The teak looks great, and motor shines like new!
As for the 11 footer that got this all started, we’re still on the fence -we’ve currently got three 110s in the YCM inventory, and they’re all prettier!
She's offered @ 22k and she's water ready!

I’m not kidding folks, this is the nicest 170 we’ve ever had.
The option list on this Whaler get’s her just shy of the 70k mark if ordering today from your local Boston Whaler dealer -ours will run you considerably less -but she's just as nice.
Luke from Coastal Transport will have her here safely sometime Tuesday morning.
BTW - that’s our orange Portland Pudgy strapped down in the back of Luke’s truck -can’t wait to play with that!

Boston Whaler 170 Super Sport!
Just arriving on this rainy Saturday @ YCM - 2014 Boston Whaler 170 Super Sport!
We’ve already plugged her in -and there’s only 112 total hours on the clock!
This is similar to the one you saw us ship to Bermuda a few weeks ago, and she’s likely to sell quickly!
We’ll clean her up, shoot more pics, and have her priced very soon, meanwhile, here’s some of the basics…
First - these boats are just plain fun and fast, and the ride quality is amazing! Say that two or three times.
You can expect the overall towing weight with trailer to be about 2000 lbs.
The draft is about 9 inches - that’s what it takes to float, remember, that's with the motor up!
They’re rated for up to 7 people, but that would be a bit out of hand!
The self bailing capabilities are outstanding.

The color is Boston Whaler “Classic Dessert Tan”
Factory Ski Tow Arch with Sun Top - a super beefy aluminum, folding tower designed to keep the ski rope up high for wake-boarders and water-skiers.
While beefy, it’s not heavy, and can be easily folded down, or removed for a day of open casting at your favorite fishing spot.

The 170 Super Sport has always been a super elusive boat to catch on the used market -they just don’t show up that often.
They first debuted on boat show floors in 2010, and had a good, eight year run -until Boston Whaler combined the 150 SS and the 170 SS, creating the new 160 SS in 2019.
Why would they axe such a cool boat?
I don’t really think they did.
If a manufacturer can offer fewer models (cars, boats, bicycles, whatever) while maintaining sales numbers, it’s generally seen as a healthy move -and it’s not hard to recognize the overlap that existed between the 130, 150, and 170 Super Sports.
Boats, like cars, have to be updated and redesigned every few years to keep the attention of the consumer and to remain competitive.
You can expect your favorite car for example, to go through a complete re-do process every 5-7 years, with minor updates annually.
With Boston Whaler, the iconic 13 footer is where it all got started, it’s important to brand identity, and I don’t see that model ever going way -continue to get more expensive, yes, but go way, no.
Needing a Super Sport with true ski-ability in the lineup, meant maintaining a higher horsepower option -so if one had to go, it was really our beloved 150 SS that was lost in the fray.
I see the new 160 Super Sport more as a redesigned/updated 170.
Sidebar - there is little competition in this high quality, small boat arena, primarily because small boat building just isn’t that profitable -the money is in building bigger boats!

So -- we had sooo many inquiries about our father/son Classic 15 & 17 Whaler set -that if this were the actual ’70s or ’80s, I mighta just taken that phone right off the the hook…
Our 15 Sport sold immediately, with at least two folks not-so happy with me -it’s not easy trying to balance several perspective and enthusiastic buyers, trying to be fair to everyone, maintain the flow, etc, etc.
As for the 17 Super Sport, she found a new home following a FaceTime video chat this morning as well.
There are still others circling incase either falls through.
But, all I want to say is -how cool is that 1980 Coast Guard Safety Inspection sticker? That boarding literally could have taken place yesterday!
You know what else is cool -that Ritchie Explorer Compass!
Ritchie made those exclusively for Boston Whaler, they were a factory option from the early ’60s through the ’70s and into the’80s, with the last production run in 1985 -they are highly sought after.
They were forty-two bucks in the ’79 Boston Whaler accessory catalog, which was kinda pricey at the time!
There’s currently one on ebay for six hundred bucks -and it’s not as nice as this one! Find a red one this nice -name your price.
Also on our Classic 15 Sport, and not valuable at all -what would have been at the time a pretty a bitchin’ cassette player.
We love finding these exceptional Whalers, swapping stories with the owners, learning their histories, and ultimately finding new homes where new stories and memories build on the old.

WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?

Every now and then a non-Whaler slips into the pack.
In this case, after purchasing a Whaler from a guy in Alabama, he began texting us pics of this very cool all in one yacht tender, sailboat, motorboat, lifeboat.
As a fan of just about any small, odd, different, quirky, proportionally interesting boat -it was instant love.
These little 7 footers (7’8”) are built in Portland Maine, and like Whalers, are marketed as unsinkable!
They are rotation-molded polyethylene and pretty much indestructible. No inflatable rubber boat stuff here!
The hull is self bailing, weighs about 128 lbs, can support a 2 hp outboard, is a super clever design, with oars, sails, and gear all tucking neatly inside the boat.
There’s even a small wheel on the stern to assist with moving the boat around while on land.
If used as an actual lifeboat, a full protective enclosure is available which still allows the boat to be sailed as apposed to just aimlessly adrift.
She’s cute, but make no mistake -this is a serious, high quality little boat!

Another Whaler on her way home...
There goes a 1998 Boston Whaler Conquest 21 -she left YCM yesterday, heading for Manlius, NY, a small suburb just southeast of Syracuse.
No subways or crowded sidewalks in this part of New York, just a beautiful small and outdoorsy town complete with parks, hiking trails, even a few waterfalls. They’re about an hour’s drive to Lake Ontario, surrounded by several other lakes, and not far from the Adirondacks.
Winters could be tough, otherwise, sounds pretty nice!
Andres is the new owner, he’s excited, and he’s been a real pleasure to work with.
The Conquest should be a good choice for Andres, with the cabin and wraparound windshield providing comfort from the wind on chillier days, helping to extend their relatively short boating season.
The cabin on the 21 is almost Transformer-like, and goes beyond the normal, simple storage and porta-pottie found with most boats this size. On the Conquest, the cabin is well thought out, and modular -configured for upright seating, laying flat, dining at a table, etc.
There’s also plenty of fishable space on this boat, rear seating, and a clever hinged backrest allowing easy access to the integrated swim platform.
We don’t bring in many cabin Whalers, but I like the size of the Conquest 21. While you’ll know it’s behind you, it’s still pretty easy to tow with a normal sized pickup.
Anyway, we’re hoping for fun pics from Andres on one of those beautiful lakes of New York soon!

We ordered a new factory bimini top from William J Mills, as well as front and side enclosures (it gets cold up there!).
Hopefully we’ll get some cool on the water pics soon, followed by some chillier pics with that enclosure up!

We've been working on this one for a while now!
Father and Son Whalers!
One’s a 1982 Boston Whaler 15 Sport w/optional wrap around seat back, the other’s a super nice 1985 Boston Whaler 17 Super Sport!
They’re freshwater boats coming out of Ohio, and we’re pretty darn excited about the pair!
The 17 belongs to the father, he’s in his 70s and doing a little downsizing. She’s powered by an extremely low hour 1999 Johnson 90 hp two stroke, and resting on a 2011 custom fit Load Master aluminum trailer -that’s never been dipped in the water.
The 15 belongs to his son, they bought her way back in ’83 from the original owner, when the boat was just a year old. The original Mercury 70 hp two stroke is still on the back, also with very low hours.
These boats have been stored in a climate controlled building for years, they’ll be here soon -and they’ll be expensive.
